Mariana Lea, MS
Former MS Student
I was born and raised in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, and went to the University of Wisconsin Madison for my undergraduate degree. I entered as an undeclared major, but knew I would go for some sort of science. In my sophomore year, I stumbled upon botany, and joined Dr. Don Waller's plant ecology lab in the Department of Botany. After graduation in December 2012, I began the search for a graduate program to continue my education, and the following fall came across Dr. Diana Tomback's work here in the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of Colorado Denver. My Masters project developed the first SSR markers to assess the genetic diversity of whitebark pine in collaboration with other experts in the field. I TAed General Biology I and II Lab while working on my masters. I graduated in Fall of 2017, and my master's research was published in fall of 2018.
